Acquisitions

Acquisitions is responsible for the development, management, and acquisition of materials for Kent Library’s collection. This includes coordinating the Department Liaison program, managing the Carrie Woodburn Johnson Endowment Grant awards for faculty, staff, and student groups, overseeing the “What would you like to read about?” student-selected subject initiative, and supporting the Kent Library Collection Development and Management Committee.

Acquisitions works with both physical and electronic formats to purchase books, journals, databases, media, and other materials as requested, in alignment with Kent Library's Collection Development Policy

Programs

The Department Liaison program enables Acquisitions to collaborate with faculty designees from each department to develop Kent Library’s collection. Acquisitions supports faculty-driven collection development by allocating annual funds to academic departments for purchasing materials relevant to their disciplines.

Grants

The Carrie Woodburn Johnson Endowment Grant program annually awards funds to faculty, staff, and student groups to develop the collection in specific areas. These grants are provided through two separate application processes: one for student groups in the fall and another for faculty and staff in the spring for each academic year.

Initiatives

Acquisitions encourages student engagement through the “What would you like to read about?” initiative. This program allows Southeast Missouri State University students to participate in Kent Library’s collection development by selecting a subject area they wish to enhance. Each fall semester, a Liaison Librarian reviews the student-selected subject and selects materials to add to the collection based on the chosen topic.

Committees

The Kent Library Collection Development and Management Committee consists of six librarians and the Acquisitions Manager (Chair). This committee reviews and evaluates subscription renewals, additions, and other items that require broader consensus for decision-making. The recommendations of this standing committee are implemented by Acquisitions.
